Hello, friend. By way of introduction, I’m a board member and the Campus Director of Belle Ame Center for Artful Living – home of the Well-Educated Heart philosophy of learning. My wife, Irene, and I are the grateful parents of five children. I’m a native of the Idaho Falls area, though we now live full time at the Belle Ame Center Campus in Northwest Missouri. We hope you’ll come visit us sometime.

My inclination toward education sprouted in a childhood of books and conversation, survived a BA in teacher education, ripened in a MA in second-language acquisition, and now thrives in practice. I have taught English and Spanish at private and public schools, managed a team of instructional designers at a nuclear energy lab, and overseen curriculum and learning at American Heritage School Worldwide. I am most interested in what I term “production-based learning”, where students learn in the context of creating something of genuine value to others. In practice, this production-based approach brings education together with my other great interest: regenerative agriculture. I’m grateful we’ll get to meet and learn from each other.

Nephi grew up in the beautiful landscape of Moab, Utah and graduated from Utah State with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a M.S. in Biomedical Engineering and MBA from the University of Tennessee. The boy crisis – Helping our young men find their way in a world that has left them behind. The data is clear; our young men are falling behind at an alarming rate. Worldwide the problem is even more serious. Young men are failing on nearly every metric we use to measure progress, but why? In this class we will discuss some of the problems we are seeing and what we can do to help our boys (our own and those around us) turn the tide and find success.
How to conquer a civilization – What would you do if you wanted to destroy a civilization? In this class we will look back at history to see what led to the fall of some of the greatest civilizations on Earth and draw parallels to what we are now seeing in Western society. You will leave this class with either a plan to conquer the world, or one to help your families change and try to save it.

Youth Class – Take Charge of Your Brain, Take Charge of Your Life
Have you ever wondered why you do something even when you don’t want to? Why do you pick up your phone and open your messenger app, even though you know that no one has texted? In this class we’ll discuss how our brain reacts to everyday activities and how companies have figured out how to hijack that process to get us to do things that make them money. Then, we will cover ways that you can take back control.

Youth Class – Perspectacles: Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life

Class Description: The world is full of data, and our brain decides what to see. Our eyes see pixelated images, and our brains have to make sense of what we are seeing and finish the pictures. What our brain is thinking about is more likely to be what our eyes focus on. We are the air traffic controllers of our mind. We may not be able to control what thoughts fly overhead, but we do control which
ones land. Air traffic controllers go through lots of training to do their jobs. You can train your mind to do your job! Come and learn ten tools – ten training modules – to help YOU change your thoughts, which will change your vision, and those two things put together will help you create a new YOU!

A former classroom teacher, Jessica has taught grades 1 through 5 and still misses being with students. She has tutored children of all ages. She serves as a founding board member of the Idaho Reading League, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing literacy. Her career started because her second child struggled to learn to read, sparking a passion for supporting children, parents, and educators alike. Jessica is currently pursuing a doctorate in Reading Science at Mount St. Joseph University

She loves to mentor youth and adults, help heal hearts and families, and use her gifts and talents to bless others and further the Lord’s work here on earth. She comes from a yours-mine-and-ours family with 21 kids. She has lived in poverty-stricken Bolivia, helping people learn to read, garden, build adobe huts, and embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ. As a family, they have raised pigs, dairy goats, chickens, Guinea hens, rabbits, turkeys, ducks, geese, sheep, an orphaned cow, dogs, and cats. They have also raised all sorts of crops for personal use and also to sell at farmer’s markets. They love hunting and processing their own meat, canning food, making cheese, fermenting foods, making home-made vinegar, and more! They have a business called the Homestead Institute where they teach people to be self-reliant, improve their emotional and physical health, and live off the land. Rosie loves people, life, and learning and her love for the Lord motivates her in all she does.

Remembering Your Worth

Have you ever felt like you weren’t “enough?” Good enough, smart enough, strong enough… One of Satan’s biggest tools is to get us to doubt our worth and man, is he good at it! We cannot achieve our full potential or help others as successfully in that state of mind. Through interactive games, examples, and stories we will explore values, worth, and how it all relates to people and self-esteem. The goal is that at the end of our time together, everyone will leave not just knowing, but understanding and ultimately FEELING the eternal truth that we all have great value and worth, allowing us to achieve our full potential and bless our lives and the lives of others.

EUCLID! The key to learning how to think!

Euclid is an ancient geometry textbook containing the propositions that make up the study
of geometry as we know it today. Historically, geometry was known as the language of
philosophy and it was always a pre-requisite to higher education because the process of
learning to understand its principles was known to equip students with the ability to think
and communicate clearly, reasonably and soundly.
But isn’t geometry math? What does it have to do with philosophy?
As a sort of arming against sophistry and rhetoric, a thorough study of Euclid will enable
students to see through the smooth-tongued and emotionally charged as they practice
anchoring themselves in plain and simple logic by forming proofs based on common notions
and prior proofs.
Often we hear arguments that “feel off”or rub us the wrong way, yet we do not always know
how to identify nor articulate the error we sense. A study of Euclid is an intense training in
logic and will produce in the student not only a keen awareness of flimsy, false, or circular
logic, but also the ability to name it, call it out, and clearly communicate their own views.

Seth Woodland, a middle child of nine, was raised north of Paul, Idaho on the family farm. The farm lies on the outskirts of lava tubes where the clay soil is very rocky. This provided the opportunity for him to develop strong work ethics as machinery constantly broke with endless amounts of rocks to be removed in the spring. However, there was nowhere else he’d rather be besides the football field or wrestling mat. Seth served a Spanish speaking, LDS mission in Arcadia, California. Following his service, he attended a local college and met his amazing wife, Emily. They were married a year later in 2003. Seth graduated, cum laude from Utah State University with a B.S. in Agriculture Engineering. He then returned to the farm and is in the transition of buying the family farm. He loves the open sky, hard work, and being with his children as they work together throughout the year. Life hasn’t always been easy. Together, with Emily, they have overcome hard challenges and have persevered. Homeschooling their five children for the past fifteen years has been the best decision they have made. Seth is passionate about the reasons he has chosen to lead the family in their educational path with the motto, “Learn to Love to Learn,” to guide them.

Emily Woodland, loves teaching and helping all find truth through Christ. She is passionate in helping mothers find the courage to be their children’s mentor in their education and fulfilling their divine mission as mothers and wives. Emily grew up the oldest of eight in Paul, Idaho, where she was homeschooled and graduated from American Heritage Academy at sixteen. Family life included helping her parents build log homes, running a raspberry farm and mobile butchering business, 4H, growing a large garden and canning produce. Emily lost her dad to suicide when she was twenty years old which changed her life forever. She has since been blessed with opportunities to grow in truth and healing with Christ.as life encounters further challenges. Her greatest joy is in being married to Seth Woodland. He gave her the greatest gift – five amazing children, two, who are now young adults. Homeschooling was always her goal as a mother. It has been a way of life that has knitted her family culture for the past twenty-two years. Emily graduated in culinary arts and business management in college. She loves everything artistic, history, liberty, travel, growing cut flowers and a huge garden, There is no place like life on the farm, where she and Seth have chosen to raise their family and pursue their careers on 1,600 acres.

She sees herself, not as an expert or professional but as a regular, ordinary homeschool momma who has been very intentional with implementing Christ in all aspects of her children’s lives, and feels drawn to share her experience with other homeschool families with children in their early years. Though her children are young, they have an incredible love for Jesus, and they love learning more about Him. They are basically proof that she is doing something right.

Amongst her role as a homeschooling parent, she is also the Art Director for IDAHOmagazine, the graphic designer for her church, and the Director for a parent equipping program for homeschoolers called Christian Classical Conversations. She resides in Idaho Falls and in her very rare spare time, she likes to diamond paint and to spend time with her family, whether that’s going on trips, taking family bike rides, or having a family game night.

Excited by all she discovered she began sharing what she learned on her website, Women in the Scriptures.com 

Heather is the author of the Walking with the Women in the Scriptures series, God Comes to Women and a co-author of The Gift of Giving Life: Rediscovering the Divine Nature of Pregnancy and Birth. She has a bachelor’s degree from BYU and Masters Degree in the Bible and the Ancient Near East from Hebrew University of Jerusualem. While getting her degree Heather, her husband and six kids lived in Jerusalem for two years. They had an amazing experience but are now back home in Pocatello, Idaho.
