Adam Hailstone

Adam is passionate about building a vibrant and expanding community to support students in their adventure through learning. He says, “I love inspiring parents and students to get a great education and overcome the barriers in their way. My role directly aligns with my life’s mission, so it’s as much a calling as it is a career.” He studied Liberal Arts as an undergraduate and later received his MBA from the University of Michigan. Adam initially joined Williamsburg Learning in 2010 as a mentor and later designed much of The Williamsburg Curriculum. He has presented talks on education throughout the U.S. and Canada and loves finding creative ways to expand and enhance the Williamsburg tribe. He lives with his wife and family in Denver, Colorado.

Title: How To Think, Not What To Think
The world today operates differently from when our education system was created, let alone when we (parents) were growing up. Innovation, not conformity, is valued and rewarded, and the job market is starving for people who can connect the dots and lead.

Because you homeschool, your children will avoid the conformity mentality perpetuated by most schools today. But avoiding that isn’t enough. In this presentation, Adam Hailstone will teach you how to train your kids to be great thinkers, creators, and disruptors.

Title: The Science of Motivation
Motivation is not always easy to come by. Motivating others, especially our kids, can be even harder. So often, parents, teachers, and employers use methods to motivate others that work in the short term but do not last, or even worse, have long-lasting negative effects. In this workshop, Adam Hailstone will share with you the science of motivation and how to nurture deep intrinsic motivation in your children to achieve their potential.

Ugh! Sometimes, it’s hard to homeschool—energy wanes as the year goes on, the kids seem less engaged; it all feels like a grind. In his free time from these important roles, he is the CEO of NexTek Innovations (a medical device incubator), entrepreneur, founder and president of Wealth Mentality Families, author of 2 best-selling books (Katie Bell and the Wishing Well; A Story of Finding True Wealth and The Big Startup Guidebook for Kids), and keynote speaker.
Nephi grew up in the beautiful landscape of Moab, Utah and graduated from Utah State with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a M.S. in Biomedical Engineering and MBA from the University of Tennessee. Nephi still enjoys the process of innovation and creation in the world of medical devices but finds his true passion in teaching and helping families to find their true purpose and create the life they desire. He teaches parents and youth how to avoid falling into the traps of worldliness and consumption while also pursuing true wealth in the correct way to be used in the service of others.
The boy crisis – Helping our young men find their way in a world that has left them behind. The data is clear; our young men are falling behind at an alarming rate. Worldwide the problem is even more serious. Young men are failing on nearly every metric we use to measure progress, but why? In this class we will discuss some of the problems we are seeing and what we can do to help our boys (our own and those around us) turn the tide and find success.
How to conquer a civilization – What would you do if you wanted to destroy a civilization? In this class we will look back at history to see what led to the fall of some of the greatest civilizations on Earth and draw parallels to what we are now seeing in Western society. You will leave this class with either a plan to conquer the world, or one to help your families change and try to save it.

Her journey began with a deep desire to rekindle her children’s love for learning, and it has blossomed into a mission to inspire others. Sometimes as her six children, ranging from preschool to high school, pass by her, she wonders if their fashion inspiration came from a Dr. Suess book with tassels of hair flailing, mismatched socks, no shoes, and the constant reminder to brush their teeth. Sacrifices had to be made as Breann Duffin grinded to learn everything she could about how to educate in a superhuman way. She has earned two Bachelor’s Degrees from Brigham Young University-Idaho. The first in Agriculture and the second in Secondary Education; certificates in Agriculture and All Sciences. She earned her Master’s Degree in Education in Curriculum Design and Instruction with an emphasis in Learning Design and Technology from Purdue University. She added her Elementary Education certificate after she finished her master’s degree. Over the last twenty years, she has taught all levels, PreK through 12th grade, and also has a decade of experience in teaching at the university and adult levels. She has trained teachers from all over the nation, built a thriving music studio of fifty students, started and directed a PreK-12th grade youth softball program in her community, sang her heart out as the lead in the community musicals, served as the president of her town’s Arts Council, and has built the curriculum for and mentored three IDX STEAM teams who all won first place in Idaho.  She did all this as she was doing the most important work of homeschooling and nurturing her family. Her most valuable experiences have come through the constant introspection of her family’s character, their level of motivation and diligence, and the educational methodologies used in their homeschool. She is honored to be amongst other beautiful individuals at this conference as we learn to develop strengths that make us secretly superhuman.

Jessica Ziel is a reading coach in Idaho, contracted to support the state’s Striving to Meet Achievement in Reading Together (SMART) project. This initiative focuses on equipping in-service K–3 teachers with Science of Reading practices.
A former classroom teacher, Jessica has taught grades 1 through 5 and still misses being with students. She has tutored children of all ages. She serves as a founding board member of the Idaho Reading League, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing literacy. Her career started because her second child struggled to learn to read, sparking a passion for supporting children, parents, and educators alike. Jessica is currently pursuing a doctorate in Reading Science at Mount St. Joseph University

This session explains how language comprehension supports literacy and what it means when children have trouble expressing themselves. We’ll look at challenges such as Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) and share practical ways families can help children grow in their language and reading skills.

Dyslexia 101
In this session, parents will be provided a general overview of what dyslexia is, how it affects children, and how to help. We’ll talk about signs to watch for, some myths, and supports at home.

She comes from a yours-mine-and-ours family with 21 kids. She has lived in poverty-stricken Bolivia, helping people learn to read, garden, build adobe huts, and embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ. As a family, they have raised pigs, dairy goats, chickens, Guinea hens, rabbits, turkeys, ducks, geese, sheep, an orphaned cow, dogs, and cats. They have also raised all sorts of crops for personal use and also to sell at farmer’s markets. They love hunting and processing their own meat, canning food, making cheese, fermenting foods, making home-made vinegar, and more! They have a business called the Homestead Institute where they teach people to be self-reliant, improve their emotional and physical health, and live off the land. Rosie loves people, life, and learning and her love for the Lord motivates her in all she does.

Title: Greek vs. Hebrew Views of Truth and Why It Matters

We are swimming in the waters of a Greek world we inherited from Plato, Socrates, and the great thinkers of the Western World. That perspective views truth as an idea, while the Hebrew perspective views truth as a person. “This is why many of the questions we ask—however simple and honest they may seem—simply do not have immediate answers. It is because our questions implicitly assume a Greek world, and we are dealing with a Hebrew faith. The idea view of truth (and its Greek assumptions) has made the Hebrew tradition and belief look like nonsense” (Thayne & Grant). Come and learn the differences between these two ways of thinking! In doing so, you will deepen your search for truth, embolden your faith, and increase the power of Jesus Christ in your life.

Seth Woodland, a middle child of nine, was raised north of Paul, Idaho on the family farm. The farm lies on the outskirts of lava tubes where the clay soil is very rocky. This provided the opportunity for him to develop strong work ethics as machinery constantly broke with endless amounts of rocks to be removed in the spring. However, there was nowhere else he’d rather be besides the football field or wrestling mat. Seth served a Spanish speaking, LDS mission in Arcadia, California. Following his service, he attended a local college and met his amazing wife, Emily. They were married a year later in 2003. Seth graduated, cum laude from Utah State University with a B.S. in Agriculture Engineering. He then returned to the farm and is in the transition of buying the family farm. He loves the open sky, hard work, and being with his children as they work together throughout the year. Life hasn’t always been easy. Together, with Emily, they have overcome hard challenges and have persevered. Homeschooling their five children for the past fifteen years has been the best decision they have made. Seth is passionate about the reasons he has chosen to lead the family in their educational path with the motto, “Learn to Love to Learn,” to guide them.

Emily Woodland, loves teaching and helping all find truth through Christ. She is passionate in helping mothers find the courage to be their children’s mentor in their education and fulfilling their divine mission as mothers and wives. Emily grew up the oldest of eight in Paul, Idaho, where she was homeschooled and graduated from American Heritage Academy at sixteen. Family life included helping her parents build log homes, running a raspberry farm and mobile butchering business, 4H, growing a large garden and canning produce. Emily lost her dad to suicide when she was twenty years old which changed her life forever. She has since been blessed with opportunities to grow in truth and healing with Christ.as life encounters further challenges. Her greatest joy is in being married to Seth Woodland. He gave her the greatest gift – five amazing children, two, who are now young adults. Homeschooling was always her goal as a mother. It has been a way of life that has knitted her family culture for the past twenty-two years. Emily graduated in culinary arts and business management in college. She loves everything artistic, history, liberty, travel, growing cut flowers and a huge garden, There is no place like life on the farm, where she and Seth have chosen to raise their family and pursue their careers on 1,600 acres.

She sees herself, not as an expert or professional but as a regular, ordinary homeschool momma who has been very intentional with implementing Christ in all aspects of her children’s lives, and feels drawn to share her experience with other homeschool families with children in their early years. Though her children are young, they have an incredible love for Jesus, and they love learning more about Him. They are basically proof that she is doing something right.

Amongst her role as a homeschooling parent, she is also the Art Director for IDAHOmagazine, the graphic designer for her church, and the Director for a parent equipping program for homeschoolers called Christian Classical Conversations. She resides in Idaho Falls and in her very rare spare time, she likes to diamond paint and to spend time with her family, whether that’s going on trips, taking family bike rides, or having a family game night.

Homeschooling is an opportunity to raise your children how you see fit and be in control of what they are being taught. A lot of homeschooling families choose to homeschool because they want their children to be taught a biblical worldview and not a secular worldview. They want to be able to include biblical teachings in their child’s curriculum. They want to raise their children with a love for God, and they know they need more than just a Sunday every week to do that. She holds a bachelor’s degree in physics and a master’s degree in Science Education. Keri is a mother of six, homeschooler of 20 years, and a private math tutor. With a special interest in how children learn, Keri has spent two decades researching, discussing, and discovering how to help students fall in love with learning and drive their own life-long education. She loves to see a child caught up in a great book, their heart aglow, and their mind engaged without effort because of the natural joy of learning. Heather Farrell’s love for the scriptures began early, when at the age of eleven she hid a flashlight under her pillow so she could read the Old Testament late at night. Her love for women in the scriptures began when her oldest son was born around Christmas and she felt a kinship with Mary. She began researching Mary and realized there were hundreds of women in the scriptures but that very little had been written on them. Excited by all she discovered she began sharing what she learned on her website, Women in the Scriptures.com 

Heather is the author of the Walking with the Women in the Scriptures series, God Comes to Women and a co-author of The Gift of Giving Life: Rediscovering the Divine Nature of Pregnancy and Birth. She has a bachelor’s degree from BYU and Masters Degree in the Bible and the Ancient Near East from Hebrew University of Jerusualem. While getting her degree Heather, her husband and six kids lived in Jerusalem for two years. They had an amazing experience but are now back home in Pocatello, Idaho.

Steven Adams is currently an Online Program Director at BYU-Idaho working with academic programs serving BYU Pathway Worldwide. He has taught students from 3rd grade to college. The first part of his career was spent starting and building private and charter schools. He then served as the Director of Charter, Virtual and Home Education at the Florida Department of Education. While working in Tallahassee he attended Florida State University and received a Master’s and Ph.D. in History and Philosophy of Education with focus in education policy and religious intolerance through educational systems. He lives in Sugar City where he serves as Mayor. He is married to the former Michelle Winters, has seven children and six grandchildren.

Natural Rights and the Declaration of Independence
      
We will compare the concept of Natural Rights and the political systems built on that idea with the modern understanding of Civil Rights and the concerns this brings to good government and liberty. We will discuss the origins of natural rights in political philosophy and the importance to know and teach the idea to our children. This will be a combination of lecture and discussion with those attending. You are encouraged to be familiar with John Locke’s Second Treatise on Civil Government.

Cameron Taylor is a best-selling author and entrepreneur. He is the author of eleven books, including the bestseller The Way of Aloha: Lanai and the international bestseller 8 Attributes of Great Achievers. Cameron graduated with honors from the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University and is the founder of several successful companies and charities. Cameron served as a fulltime missionary in Hawaii. He holds two patents and enjoys playing basketball, golf, hiking, and reading. He is also a champion somersaulter and has never been beaten in a somersault race. His favorite foods are cheese fries and ice cream.

Paula grew up in Frankfort, Indiana, where her high school mascot was a hot dog.  She also graduated from BYU Provo – but without honors! She and Cameron met at BYU at a leadership seminar where they studied Jesus as the perfect example of leadership, and where she was Cameron’s boss. Paula is loud, energetic and has serious problems with sitting still. She loves Jesus, people, hosting gatherings & helping people feel God’s love. Her favorite spiritual gift is giving hugs. Her motto is, “Jesus gives hugs, not handshakes!” When she’s not giving hugs, she can be found reading, listening to podcasts, editing her husband or son’s books, spending time with her family and friends or spending time outdoors.

I have finally decided to come out of the closet to confess to the world that I am, well I am….. a……well….., I am an a-a-arrrtist!  There, I said it! Yes, it is true. Since a fateful encounter in 2005, I have been addicted to paint and varnish fumes.  I confess I’ve had daily encounters with unreputable things most people discard as junk. I go dumpster diving I’m so desperate.  Some of you have seen the effects of my addiction.  I have confided in you and you have left my home speechless.  My addiction is beyond words to describe.  It’s true.  I have a hard time explaining it myself.  Some of you appreciate my addiction and get it. But others just don’t get it, and still others, like my husband, are annoyed by my addiction.
To come clean, I’ll tell you my addiction I…I… break things.  If they are not broken, I break them. I cut them off, everything is under the hammer, screw, and the drill, and you’d think I was a dentist. My clocks are all broken, and I dissect organs for fun.  I deceive people into thinking that things work, when they don’t.  I have been deceiving people for years.
I can’t help it! That’s just who I am.

Kris interprets her 3D assemblage art as metaphors for life. She sees recycled and found objects and castaways not for what they are but for what they aren’t and for what they could be. She’ll use her art to introduce, not a virtual or a two-dimensional life but a 3D, real-life, experiencial education where the world becomes your classroom, your Master Artist Studio. It’s possible that after this class, your world will never be the same.

Hello, friend. By way of introduction, I’m a board member and the Campus Director of Belle Ame Center for Artful Living – home of the Well-Educated Heart philosophy of learning. My wife, Irene, and I are the grateful parents of five children. I’m a native of the Idaho Falls area, though we now live full time at the Belle Ame Center Campus in Northwest Missouri. We hope you’ll come visit us sometime.

My inclination toward education sprouted in a childhood of books and conversation, survived a BA in teacher education, ripened in a MA in second-language acquisition, and now thrives in practice. I have taught English and Spanish at private and public schools, managed a team of instructional designers at a nuclear energy lab, and overseen curriculum and learning at American Heritage School Worldwide. I am most interested in what I term “production-based learning”, where students learn in the context of creating something of genuine value to others. In practice, this production-based approach brings education together with my other great interest: regenerative agriculture. I’m grateful we’ll get to meet and learn from each other.

hails from Las Vegas, Nevada. He and his wife, Heidi, have been married for nearly four
decades and have raised their fifteen children. Their journey into home education began early,
particularly with their deaf, autistic, and other special needs children who required unique ways
of learning. While Heidi is the show’s real star in developing their homeschool journey, Russ
soon learned the importance of Dad’s role in the venture’s success. Russ has edited the
Universal Model, a 1600-page, two-volume science text, several (LDS) Church history books,
and just completed a new reprint of Joseph Smith’s Inspired Version of the Bible. Russ and
Heidi founded TruthSeekers, LLC, and developed a biblically-based health science and
geography curriculum. They are working on English workbooks based on scriptural texts and a
Genesis Homeschool Workbook. Known as “The Genesis Guy,” Russ guides science and
Church history tours that affirm the science of the Creation and the Flood in scripture. Russ is
actively homeschooling with three children who are still at home. He brings a wide variety of
experiences to the table, making his diverse roles all the more intriguing and applicable.
